When you think about the whirlwind of meetings and events that took place at NAR’s 2015 Legislative Meetings and Trade Expo, the average attendee has no clue how much work went into this week. Over 80 committees met, dozens and dozens of official meetings took place, and thousands of details had to be coordinated. Every meeting consisted of a Chair, Co-Chairs, NAR staff liason(s), and members. I arrived early Friday morning for the Professional Development Committee meeting – over an hour early, in fact. The room was not empty, as I sought a few minutes of solitude to drink my coffee and read the newspaper quietly. Tech people were checking the mics and sound quality. NAR staff buzzed around setting out name cards and distributing agendas. Someone realized the room was not set up as asked – and called hotel staff to bring another table for the back of the room. A travel trunk was on the floor, containing paperwork and other items needed for this meeting. Maybe each meeting – or room – had its own trunk of materials needed for the event.
When we go to these meetings, we see the end result: attendees fill in the seating, members discuss and debate topics, and business is done. Then we all file out to go to the next session on our list. What we don’t see is the hard work and preparation for each and every event that takes place for the week. Thank you to all the meeting Chairpeople, Co-Chairs, NAR Staff and volunteer members of these boards and committees. Your hard work – both this week and all year long – is what makes this organization great and powerful. See you in 2016!
