As thousands of REALTORS from around the country head to Capitol Hill this week to meet with legislators and their staff, Brad Fitch of Congressional Management Foundation shared some simple, but important, tips for communicating a message that resonates on The Hill. Looking to turn story telling into a repeatable science, Brad has studied movie scripts to figure out the formula for compelling story telling, so that it can be used in a lobbying context. Don’t just spew information or talking points at your member of Congress. Instead, limit the issues of concern and communicate them via story telling. Personalize your legislative issues. What’s at stake? Who is (or would be) affected? Legislators respond to situations where the struggle is real! What is the struggle? How can the legislator’s assistance help overcome it and create a win for her constituents?
Go to The Hill armed with information, statistics, and talking points, but remember that communicating a compelling message on behalf of the REALTOR Party will depend much more on your ability to weave a compelling narrative than to have a Sheldon-Cooper-esque encyclopedic knowledge of just the facts.
