This is a huge committee. The full title is Land Use, private property rights and environment committee. We met as a group on Tuesday and I think there were close to eighty committee members there and a large number of observers. The committee observes all sorts of land related issue and expands into property related legislation. Until recently it handled flood insurance issue. The current topics are waters of the US, the clean water act, and energy efficiency, endangered species act, lead paint, property rating systems. While no one is against clean water or clean air, many members are adamant defenders of private property rights. The conversation was once again lively and surprising wide ranging. It wandered off topic a few times discussing the effectiveness of improving windows and the wisdom of having solar cells. This group currently has a sub group that is reviewing NAR’s Climate Change policy to see if it needs updating. The guest speaker was with FireSafe , Michele Steinberg, Division manager Wildland Fire Operations. A hot topic (sorry) considering the immense fire currently being fought in Alberta. Her organization helps create safe properties in fire endangered areas. And interesting factoid, the number of wildfires is not significantly higher, but the intensity and size is way bigger than previous years.
