Sustainability for the REALTOR® Future

One of the groups that I am most proud to be a part of is the Green Advisory Board where I serve with a small group of the most forward thinking REALTORS® in our industry. As a result of my work with this group I was invited by 2014 National President Steve Brown to an Environmental Summit in DC. We heard from thought leaders from government agencies on the dangers that we face when it comes to climate change and how it will effect our clients and our industry as a whole. This week the work group came back together to look at how we can redefine the “R” and how to spread the good word about what we do as community builders and move this initiative forward.

“Under all is the land” is the opening statement in the preamble to the REALTOR® Code of Ethics, and without the land there would be no property rights to preserve. I truly believe that our national association wants to do what is right for our members and for the land. I am very proud that our building in DC was the first LEED certified building in our nation’s capital, and that our Chicago building has recently made changes to retrofit energy efficient upgrades. This is an effort that will not only reduce carbon emissions, it will save our members money on the cost to run utilities over time, which is a win, win, win!!! One of my favorite quotes is “we don’t inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children”. I look forward to the continued work from this group on how we can truly effect change and preserve the land, in addition to private property rights for a sustainable future.
