Wednesday at the Legislative Meetings

Wednesday started early for this West Coast boy: 7:00am for a Federal Priority Issues Briefing followed by Bob Woodward’s perspective on the race for the White House.

Bob was funny and insightful, and it was one of my favorite sessions this year. He talked about the Watergate scandal and the impact that has had on politics, and the fact that we have two candidates running for President who both have unfavorable ratings in the polls.

Next, I was able to attend a small lunch where my local association, the Spokane Association of REALTORS®, was thanked for participating in the development of the Advanced Multi-List Platform™ or AMP™. Click here to learn more about AMP™.

The afternoon was spent on the Hill where I was able to visit with Representative Cathy McMorris-Rodgers and talk with her about our priorities, including:
1. Tax issues like the mortgage interest deduction, capitol gains taxes, 1031 exchanges and their effect on the economy in both the commercial and residential markets.
2. Housing issues and the “Housing Opportunity Through Modernization Act.”
3. Flood insurance and the availability of private insurance companies to come into the marketplace.
4. Finance issues and the use of the guarantee fees or “G” fees. We discussed the cost and the use of those fees by Congress.

It was a great meeting and she listened and engaged with me and the others in our group. I was also able to participate in the meeting with Representative David Reichert and a large delegation of REALTORS® from all over the state.

Then it was back to the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel for the REALTOR® Pac awards where Washington State was honored with the medium-sized state award for most improved.Wednesday Tom Hormel-7
