Highlights from Hill Visits

As President of the Illinois REALTORS®, I represent a diverse constituency of 48,000 members, who cover markets ranging from sparsely populated rural areas to one of the world’s greatest large cities: Chicago. Our membership and our Federal Political Coordinators (FPCs) are as diverse as our congressional delegation  One of my greatest joys of being part of state leadership is getting to watch FPCs do their thing. These are REALTOR® members who volunteer to be a liaison to their member of Congress, carrying the REALTOR® Party message to those members on Capitol Hill and back home in their districts.

On this year’s agenda were advocating for:

  • Continued net neutrality
  • Elimination of the current marriage penalty in the new $10,000 limit on the deductibility of state and local income taxes
  • Creating a more stable and long-term flood insurance solution
  • Allowing continued exemption from taxation “phantom income” from short sales
  • Adding federal fair housing protections for sexual orientation and gender identity
