Housing Opportunity Committee Meets

One of the largest committees at NAR is the Housing Opportunity Committee with around 80 members. As 2018 chair, it was a delight to see very engaged committee members this year. The discussions were robust, and many contributed to the conversation regarding the NAR report called “Fair Housing at 50, Expanding Access to Opportunity”.

The four recommendations of the study are:

  1. Increase diversity in leadership and representation at NAR and within local associations
  2. Promote awareness about fair housing issues
  3. Support state and local efforts to expand housing options
  4. Advocate for national strategies aimed at promoting housing opportunities introduction

We heard from Laurie Brenner, Director of the Housing Programs with the Maryland REALTORS®. Laurie highlighted some of the policy and programmatic efforts the association is working on to bring attention to the need for financial capability and ways to expand access to it.

Two committee members shared info on housing programs in their area to address affordability challenges. Curt Reichstetter of Virginia discussed a study that examined the gap between the equity stake of senior households and the current market for senior housing. Greg Gosselin from Maine shared information about “One Warm Night,” a transitional housing program.

Thank you to our wonderful Staff Liaison and Program Manager, Wendy Penn, for working so hard to organize and prepare for our meeting. Likewise, thank you to Vice-Chair Sarah Ware from Chicago for helping to make our meeting a success.
